Today’s Project of the Day is The Punk Singer, a documentary about Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna.
Remember riot grrl? I do. I was 13 when I first heard of Bikini Kill, oddly enough in the punkest of all publications….The New York Times Art Section. Kathleen Hanna, covered in tattered rags and sweat, was screaming ferociously into microphone. It was provocative enough for me to go to Scotti’s Record shop in Morristown, NJ and search out a copy of Bikini Kill’s Reject All American. This is probably a well-worn story, and one that is clearly resonating with fans of Hanna, who have come out in droves to support a long-awaited, unabashedly insider look into the life, art, politics, and mentality of one of America’s most misunderstood legends.
